Personally i think its between the shaw shank and fight club what do u think.

Some mentioned are good films but hardly "best film" - what about "It`s A Wonderful Life" , "To Kill A Mockingbird" , "Some Like It Hot" or "Ben Hur ?
These are REAL greats.

Out of your two I would go with The Shawshank Redemption. It is difficult to pick just one overall though out off all the movies out there. One that I can still watch when it comes on though is Close Encounters. I have probibly seem it more than any other and I am sure I will watch it again.

Both first rate contenders - but what about "The Game"? or "The Machinist"? or "The Jacket"? or...oh I could go on for hours... or how about "Groundhog Day"? (based on an oriental legend where the guy lived the same day for over 1,000 years!) or the classic "Wonderful Life" with James Stewart?

Sci-Fi wise i would say Blade Runner, still as cool today as it was when it was released. Ok its not everyone's cup of tea, but I love it. A close second is Alien.
Outside of Sci-Fi I would say Shawshank Redemption or Secondhand Lions.

I like comedy the most, but I like older movies, like A Fish Called Wanda, What About Bob, and other movies I don't know if people will recognize.
