there is clearly a difference between the muscle that body builders create, compared to the muscle of somebody who has developed that muscle through activity, ie heavy lifting/building/swimming etc. how though, can you recreate that kind of muscle development in a gym?

All muscle is usable muscle. What's the clear difference? Yes, some bodybuilders aren't as strong as they appear because steroids tend to promote muscle growth without the accompanying strength increases - but they're still pretty strong. And they certainly do some heavy lifting!

Concentrate on compound weightlifting exercises - deadlifts, squats, bench press, dips, chins, rows. Compound exercises are ones that use a lot of different muscles rather than just one. These exercises will build a balanced physique, and increase your strength at the same time.

Perhaps powerlifters refine their technique by the use of alternating grips, chalk, and style of training. Arnold Schwarzenegger competited in powerlifting tournaments before adopting the repetition style, high volume workouts of the day.

Even if farm boys are strong, which is all relative to the next farm boy, there is a direct colleration between size and strength in general so rest assured bodybuilders are extremely strong. especially the elite, who are the strongest of them all we could safely assume. Also, what bodyuilders are you speaking of? You can't really generalise them into one category, Ronnie Coleman, Jay Cutler et al are in a category of their own, the top elite.

Deadlifting is a good way to build functional strength anyway, theres no cheating the deadlift. Between you and the ground & gravity is a heavy mass which can only be lifted by you. This is a test of strength, and so you must build upon it. You cannot deadlift 600lbs[how much effort it requires, etc is all the determining factor] without some sort of ''usable muscle''. so don't worry. And, they say youre only as strong as your weakest link -- so dont neglect any part of youre body!

Well, in my job as a physical therapy dude, I have noted that also with my own experience, muscles that are used everyday, worked moderately, are the strongest. It seems to me that farm boys are the toughest guys, even the skinny ones. So when you work out, I think doing exercises 4 times a week especially back forearms, shoulders and triceps are esasential. Exercise done for these will cover the other muscle groups. Thats real muscle. Working mans muscle.
