Believe it or not, it is for the good of the people (U.S.). We put the politicians in office so they can do what they said they would do. The government may not work the way we want it to all the time but it's better than no government. Our government (you and me and everyone else) ensures our freedom and rights. That's what we wanted and that's what we got.

The government is like a placebo. If people believe in it, its chances of functioning are pretty high. Alone, it doesn't do anything.
But the government is often too manipulative of the people it looks over. It creates a "them and us" perspective, instead of just "you and me". It divides the people in ways that they wouldn't divide themselves. I wouldn't declare war on you for not giving me oil, for example. I really just wouldn't care.

Even anarchists and libertarians realize the necessity of government-- for better or worse, I don't think 'having one' is a moral issue.

Well, as much as we ***** about the government, without it there would be total chaos. So I'm gonna say it's for good (mostly).
