im a tiler who also does plumbing, and ive heard theres a certificate scheme for tradesmen to show they are competent in other trades. does anyone know anything about this, or where i could find any information?

There are several 'competent persons schemes' these mean that if you do certain plumbing work that should be notified to the local authority buildings inspector/local water board, you can self certify the work and there is no need for the local authority/local water board to get involved.
WIAPS (Water Industry Approved Plumber Scheme) is probably the best, it is recognized across the industry and importantly, by the water board.
Take a look at www.wras.co.uk/WIAPS there's a lot of information there. You will need to complete a qualification in the new water fittings regulations or byelaws, this is a 1 day course and usually costs about £150. If you type 'wras qualifications' into yahoo, it should point you in the right direction.

To join most plumbing associations you have to have served an apprenticeship in the trade.
Make sure your insurance covers you for doing such work IE. as a tiler you may quite often remove radiators , wash basins WC's etc. are you covered if you have a leak ?

If you live in a large city, there may be a "College of Buiding" near you which could help. Many such colleges now exist as departments within larger colleges of further education. Local libraries may hold information on what is available in your area,
