not only are the toxic but they are totally inappropriate for water dragons. both contain aromatic oils that can cause respiratory infections and liver disease. aspen does not have the oils but is still not appropriate for water dragons. they need a substrate that provides them with high humidity. i recomend i dirt type substrate like bed-a-beast. it comes in a brick and when you put it in water is expands to be enough to fill a 4og tank. it has a yellow lable with a sunbathing iguana on the front and usually costs about $5

potting soil is not good to use b/c of all the chemicalls they put in as fertilizer for the plants, and calci sand is not good b/c it cant provide the high humidity the water dragons need.

good luck and have fun with your little guy

Cedar is toxic, pine isn't, but I don't like using shavings for water dragons. They need more humidity than it can provide. Either use peatmoss or bed-a-beast (it comes in a brick, and you soak it and it turns into a peatmoss-like substrate).

Pine shavings are not, but cedar ones are.
