A guy at a local camera store is trying to talk me out of buying a photo printer because he said the pictures will fade after two years. Is this true?

Using HP ink and paper you will get up to 100 years fade resistance.

Using Epson paper and ink you will get up to 36 years fade resistance.

Using Canon ink and paper you will get up to 30 years fade resistance.

Notice, though, that they are fade resistant and not fade proof. Photos will last decades if they are kept in a photo album. If they are not kept in a photo album, they will still last several years.

A couple of years ago inkjet photos faded after a couple of yearsa. Now, since digital photography has become so popular, the major printer manufacturers have greatly improved the quality and longivity of their ink (HP, Canon, Epson).

I own an HP printer, scanner, and copier all-in-one that I bought for $169. It does the best photos I've seen anywhere. It will print any size from 3x5 up to 8.5x24. Ink is inexpensive for this printer. I recommend it to anyone.

The REAL Answer is it depends on how many photos or images you take and how often -- me, I like being creative with my Digital SLR -- so for me, having a Photo Printer in my home is worth it for me. If you use your digital camera rarely -- then going to the Local Photo Processing Place may end up more cost effective for you.

If you go with a somewhat good photo printer you will be fine. That guy might just be selling you BS. I worked at a comp sotre and to get the customers to buy extra USB cables I was told to tell them after 2 years the USB cable will corrode.

It does depend what kind of ink you're going to use. There are choices of archival refill ink. Take a look at http://fillserv.com/cic/product.php?product=Fillserv+Four-Color+Inkjet+Refill+Kit

I have a pictures printed on my printer 5 years ago and they look great.

One thing is for sure if you keep your pictures exposed to sun they will fade no matter if it's printed in store or by home printer.

They fade faster, but some last longer with better quality printers. If you keep them in an album in plastic sleeves, they last a lot longer.

depends on if your photo printer is dye sub or inkjet. Your standard dye sub printer photo will last around 100 years in good quality. inkjet is not so good. i really don't like it compared to my dye sub one.
