why do some straight women like men who are considered, "a man's man" while yet other straight women like men with more effeminate traits?

Suppose there are just as many stereotypes of heterosexuals as there are homosexuals.

Well, I'm not attracted to men, but that doesn't mean I'm going to not do everything they do. Like, I'm not going to stop playing soccer or going to get my teeth cleaned or wearing flip flops because guys do those things. Likewise, I'm not going to invent a whole new category of clothes called lesbian clothes because I don't want to identify with men by wearing pants or shorts or t-shirts. And if you're asking about why some lesbians wear suits or tuxes or ties it's because that's why they're the most comfortable in and think they look the best in. Isn't that why we all choose our dress style? And also, of course, because girly girls like me think they look hot in them. It's a butch thing. If you're not a dyke yourself it's very difficult to understand our culture.

Also, I'd like to add that when I was coming out there was a very rigid dress code among politically correct dykes. I am frankly thrilled to see all kinds of lesbians dressing all kinds of ways and kind of sad when other lesbians feel they need to tell their sisters how to dress. All kinds of butches just make the lesbian rainbow all that more beautiful!

I love pink and frills and all the girly girl stuff. I don't dress like a guy. Some Lesbians like to take on the guy role I guess. I always wondered about this one myself. Oh by the way my partner is a REAL girly girl, fashion queen. She always dresses in designer clothes, etc. I guess I need to read these answers myself!

Honestly, you have a good point here..its a real turn off to see girls dressing up like guys..i mean if you are a girl and are proud of it, then act and dress like one..the whole point of being a les is that you dont like guys and love the same sex better so if you try to become a girl (as you are) then it would complement the whole lesbian relationship and look sexy!!

Because you choose to see this as a black and white way of relating when actually we live in shades of gray (no pun intended re the book) So they don't want that level of masculinity as provided by a male only as far as what is engendered by a so called 'butch' woman.

i don't know why. i don't dress like a guy all the time, but i am attracted to a girl who does. i guess some lesbians(and most of all girls)want to feel protected and maybe even be the controlled one in the relationship. so they go around crushing on the girls that look more dominant(like a guy). thats the way i am, so thats the way i see it. it might be different for others.

Well I dress like a guy because I'm comfortable dressed that way. I think that I feel like the dude in the relationship because I take the roll of the dude. Open the door for my girl, pay the bill when we go out, and take her had when she's going down the stairs.

That stereotype is quicly going away. There are a lot of lesbians that don't dress butch. There's straight women that do. There's fem-loving fems and butch-loving butches. For those that do dress that way, it's just what we prefer. We've realized that you don't have to live by other people's standards of what a woman is.
