when i try to activate my mobile it tells me to enter my subsidy number -does anyone know what it is

you may or may not be able to get this. Call the carrier the phone originated from. If the account it was own is in good standing and the original owner of the phone will call in and the contract for the phone has been completed or ETF paid, they just MIGHT give you the code.

Most mobile phones, in particular contract phones, are locked so you can only use that networks sim card in it e.g. you got it on t-mobile so you can only use a T-mobile sim card.

The subsidy code unlocks the phone so you can use any networks sim card in it. Most networks will charge you for this code.
