You can connect two computers together using an Ethernet cable to form a small network. Depending on the computer model, you may need to use a crossover Ethernet cable instead of a straight-through Ethernet cable.
make sure both computers have the same workgroup name
assuming they are both windows xp just right click on my computer and click on properties, then click on computer name...
1. both need to have same workgroup name
2. both computers need to have different computer names
3. disable firewall on both computers assuming they are windows xp, or make sure file and print sharing is enabled on both thru the firewall settings...

The cable that you need is called a crossover cable made of cat-v or ethernet cable. The pin out of the cable is different than that of a regular cat-v. Then you need to right click on My Network Places, select Properties. Then you right click and select Properties again on the Local Area Network. on the box that shows up, select Internet Protocol, then click on the Properties icon that is just under the window and to the left. Next, you need to check the box that says Use the Following IP Address. So then you enter in an IP address and the appropriate subnet mask.
Do this for both compters and they should then talk to each other.

If you are talking about cable as in the same cable-tv cable or internet-cable cable, then no. You must use a LAN cable in order to connect your computers together. Then, you must set both of them up under the same network. (Open network places and in the left hand menu click "create a home or small business network") Make sure the network is the same name (default is MSHOME, leave it at that)

in case you will cable the machines, (using a bypass over cable as you suggested) you may desire to plug those into the NIC enjoying cards. to be certain that those Nic enjoying cards to communicate using this methodology, you "could" use an IP handle. there is not any wrong way using Cable and nic enjoying cards with out an IP handle. Now while you at the instant are not likely to apply cables, you could attempt to do it with the aid of some different techniques. you're able to do it with out cables. you have Infra-purple (i could particularly use dial up amenities with each and all the banners particularly than this gradual technique). Blue the teeth is yet another. you ought to use an advert hoc instantaneous answer yet you may nonetheless would desire to assign IP addresses to those gadgets. i'm hoping this helps, solid success

It.s not so complicate. Go to the shop and buy Ethernet crossover cable few meters long. I assume that you have network cards on both computers. Connect cable to both PCs. Go to control panel, network connections local area network. right click, properties, go to Internet protocol (TCP/IP), double click on it. Click on "Use the following IP addresses". Type for first IP 192.168.1.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Gateway you don't need it. click OK. Do the same thing on second PC but address will be 192.168.1.2.
After that you two PC's will be connected.
Right click on my computer and properties, go to Computer name and then Change. Type desired computer name and specially workgroup name. Computer names must be different on both PC,s but work group names must be the same.
Restart both PC,s. Click on my network places and you will see you remote PC. and shared files. If you want to share more folders read the windows help.

Get a hub / switch, two ethernet cables, and use the (hopefully) built-in ethernet jacks.
You'll need to install TCP/IP, and tell TCP/IP what IP addresses you're using.
If you're wanting to share the Internet connection then you'll buy a router instead of a switch, and it will set the TCP/IP addresses automatically (making life easier).
