The Clash...without a doubt. Paul simonon wasn't the best bassist when he started out but my god some of the basslines he came up with i.e. Guns of Brixton, Magnificent Seven,London Calling.
Check them out. Maybe get Story of The Clash volume 1 its the sort of singles collection go for that :)

The police. Sting puts in some excellent Bass lines - think of Walking on the Moon.

Thin Lizzy for something a bit more lively.

The Beatles - some of their music has good but simple Bass lines.

And what do they all have in common? The Bass player wrote a lot of the music!

Have you heard of " The Big Noise From Winetka" It is a famous Jazz duet recorded in the 1940s by Bob Haggart (Bass) & Ray Bauduc (Drums). The only other sounds on the record is some whistling by Haggert and a neat trick when Bauduc uses his drum sticks on the strings of the bass, Haggart doing the fingering. Bob Haggart & Ray Bauduc were members of Bob Crosby (Bing's Brother)'s
band known as The Bobcats

Queen have a lot of good bass lines in their music.

Actually thinking about it lots of heavy metal songs have great bass. Metallica in particular - some of the stuff on the famous Black album is very bass heavy.

The song Sweet Dream by Jethro Tull.

Oh and you seem to like some great bands - especially the Smiths (one of my favourites)

Just do what Mark King does...listen to Stanley Clarke, copy his riffs and call them original songs.

Techno has the BEST bass beats! Try Drum n Bass (DnB) or Jungle!
