Freon itself does not smell, mixed with a flame it gives off an odor. The only cylinder I can think of is the accumulator, that would be inside and a part of the evaporator, inside coils. If it is a cyclinder on the outside it would be a dryer filter, they are made of pretty hheavy copper and would take quuite a bit of pressure to burst. If you had a motor burnout and the gas was leaking that would give off an odor. It sound like you have a real problem, I would look around for a replacement.

It is not a gas cylinder behind the fridge, it's called a compressor and if it is burst it is better to replace the fridge completely. The cost of repairing it and having the gas refilled will be close to the price of a brand new fridge.

The chemical in most fridges are CFC's (the same stuff that damages the atmosphere and quite toxic.
Its normally cheaper to buy a new fridge rather than get it repaired.

Dont think it can be fixed, you'll probably have to replace it. I have heard somewhere as well that the gas that leaks is harmfull dont know if this is true but would defo get rid just incase

It's a sealed unit, the gas may harm the ozone, your local authority will charge you £35 to collect it, so leave it at the gates of the local tip.
Buy a new one, the compressor in it will be much more efficient and you will save electricity and in the long run it will pay for its self.
