Most types of absinthe are banned in France and Spain.

Legal drinking age in France: 16
Legal drinking age in Spain: 18

You won't be drinking any alcohol, and certainly not absinthe.

You can drink there, but the key is to keep it in moderation. No one will say anything as long as you aren't hammered. Also, you're not going to find any absinthe in either country. It's not like it is for sale at the local market. Concentrate more on the wonderful food and wine from both countries. Drinking isn't taboo there like it is here, so no one will care if you have a glass of wine or a beer. Just savor the experience and don't act like an ugly American.

Oh - legal age for *drinking*...how dull.

In most countries legal drinking age is 16, however they may be flexible...typically the age for beer is lower than absinthe.

If you want to try absinthe you may have more luck in the Czech Republic. I believe it is banned in France after it made Vincent van Gogh chop his ear off.

If you're in restaurant/bar alone, then maybe (just maybe) they'll ask your age in France. Otherwise (in a company, with a family) nobody cares - wine is good for health. Absinth is a different story...
