YES, it can be purchased separately.
NOTE that in order to match the Dell case, you need to use a unit purchased from Dell, for your model.
For this reason, I suggest that you buy an "external" unit that simply plugs in to a USB port on your Dell. (MOST come with "burner" software packages.)
ALSO, since there is such a minor difference in price, I suggest that you spend just a little more and get a CD/DVD+/-R/RW - DL, (Multi format, dual layer), burner that will handle ALL STANDARD discs. (It will NOT however handle HDTV and/or Blue-Ray, which have just recently come out and are not yet real popular.)
There are several brands and places to buy them so I would shop around a little bit before buying.
(Myself, I prefer the Plextor unit, and NERO software, but that is my personal choice.)

You can purchase a CD burner sepratley. However the only problem is that the colors and design might not fit with the desktop. When I think of dell I think of tall black towers with a curve front. The CD burners I se are rectangular and white. It is possible to add a CD Burner if you want to replace your CD drive then that is fine. If you want to put another CD drive you might need another IDE cable if it does not come with it.
If you want you can buy an external CD Burner Drive if you want if you do not want to open up the computer and install your own CD Burner.

Yes, you can order a CD burner from a variety of different places, but I would suggest getting an EXTERNAL burner so you don't have to install it internally (which you can't anyway if you have a laptop) - any of the major brands will probably work, and most, if not all, of these burners come with software...

If you know what you're doing (which it doesn't sound like), you can get one from Newegg and install it yourself. Otherwise call up Dell and ask them for a CD burner - they'll sell you one at a ridiculous price and help you install it.
