if your jc penney has a Worthington section (very dress casual type pieces) try some of their outfits and look at the display mannequins in the store to see if you like something. also, you should ask the sales associate for help. and try to get some fashion sense by watching the style network or some makeover show. and ask your friends and family members that have good fashion taste. check out stylenetwork.com or jcpenney.com

If you don't normally 'dress up', keep in simple. A pair of black or pinstriped flat front pants, that fit well can go just about any where. A plain white button down blouse, boring but safe. A tailored one, so you don't have to tuck it in, you don't have to mess with a belt that way. A crew or turtleneck sweater. A necklace, something interesting but not overly done will work with the blose or sweater. A pair of boots. Less is more and stay away from trendy. Do you have the Penny's catalog....you can look for ideas in there.

You could wearsimple dress pants or twill boot-cut pants. FOr the top, you could go for that layered look; dressy tank w/a cropped top or shrug over it.

Nice tops that have colors in them look nice with black pants. To make it simple for yourself wear a nice colorful top and basic pants or a skirt.

and any shoes you want.
you don't have to use these exact clothes. Maybe you could find some of these things in your moms closet or something. Just a nice striped shirt, a cami inside, and a pair of nice black trousers.
forever 21 and wetseal (their websites) may have these things that are cuter and cheaper. hope this helps.
