Karen is the Prime Minister's sister and lives in the same neighborhood as Natalie (the Prime Minister's would-be girlfriend) that lives nextdoor to her husband's secretary.
Daniel is Karen's friend. They never actually mention if they were friends through the dead wife or if they may have been Ex-boyfriend&girlfriend. I kinda get the feeling its the latter. He kinda speaks on the phone really rude to her in a joking tone telling her to "bugger off", that's basically the same as telling someone "F*** off" and you would really say something like that to a friend unless you were really close.
