When I was concerned with learning and teaching such things several years ago, the best site I found was Presentations.com (see link).
It depends on what level you're at and who you're trying to reach.
Keep it simple
Work from a Master Slide
Include Page Number/of Pages in footer
Include briefing title in footer
Possibly include author/company name in footer
Possibly include date in footer
Possibly include event/conference name on title slide
Don't go overboard on backgrounds (especially textures), colors, and fonts - pick a theme (try to use light fonts on dark backgrounds if this is being projected)
Don't use high-contrast colors together (blue/yellow, red/green, yellow/black, etc.)
Don't try to cram too much stuff onto one slide (print out one of your slides and place it at your feet - if you can read it, it's probably ok)
Have a structure - Title, Intro/Overview, Meaningful slide titles, Summary, Questions?, Contact info.
Use speaker notes, even if no one else ever sees them

Click on File and then new. You will then have options to use the auto content wizard. If that is noit enough - type "powerpoint tutorial" in the search and you will see at least 30 results.
