Check:

1) Volume control on speakers
2) Unplugged power supply for speakers
3) Defective/misconnected speakers

All of the above- actual volume controls on your speakers, and the volume control on your desktop (master and the invididual ones (line in, CD, etc).

If you are playing something back using software (windows media player, etc) check that application's volume setting as well.

Two possibilities and they both happened to me.

Either the speakers are not designed to go high, or you have not used your computer speakers enough and they have to be 'run in'. I did it and after a short while, I could hear it getting louder.

Make sure that you have also got the settings set to their highest.
