There is a growing notion in the U.S. (and probably elsewhere, too) that you must get a formal education to be successful; driving buses or delivering the mail just doesn't cut it anymore - you MUST be rich and powerful. What do you think of this increasingly prevalent mindset that is permeating throughout our schools? Is it right, or just closed-minded? Can you be successful without college? Does everyone really NEED to be "successful" in the worldly sense to begin with? I want to know your thoughts.

Absolutely not. I just recieved my MBA and I'm having a very dfficult time finding a job. My husband became an electrician right out of high school and makes a very nice living. Enough to support us both and I do not have to work. We own a home and two cars and have no debt.

Education will get you a step ahead but its all what you do with it is what counts. I do not regreat getting my education and I'm sure it will pay off down the road but education will not make you a sucess and lack of education will not prevent you from success.

In general success is defined by the person not someone who is judging you. Sucess usually means making a lot of money or having a lot of power and respect. But others define success in other ways. Everyone needs to be successful in order to feel fufilled in life. However, each person can definte success in different ways and it does not have to be the standard definition. Your life is your own and it is your to choose what makes you happy and content.

There are a lot of jobs that don't require 4 years of college, or more. But they are getting shipped overseas more and more. A lot of manufacturing is done overseas, for example, and the finished product is imported. Some jobs, like bus drivers, plumbers, electricians, etc. must be done here. You can join an apprentice program to learn those trades.

If you don't want to go to college, don't go. But realize that going to college will increase the potential income you might earn. Mechanics need some sort of schooling; builders can greatly benefit from it. You shouldn't rule it out just because you don't like high school, for example.

I agree that people nowadays think that being a waitress or a taxi driver or whatever is not good enough, but even so, with a better education, you can get a higher paying job, which is good overall for you and your family. I think success is doing what you love and doing it well, but some people's idea of success comes only with an education from college.

Well, going to college helps you to be sucessful faster thats why ......and I feel that if you dont want to be rich and powerful you dont have to be it is a choice.
I would actaully prefer to be rich and powerful than poor and helpless. Also you can succeed without college if you are deteremined and focused and ready to take the longer and harder route.
Everyone doesnt have to be sucessful and sucess isnt all about money I guess its is mostly about being the most and the best you can be in this life. and that could be doing whatever. (mother theresa, nelson mandela).
If you feel sucessful driving a bus and delivering mail then who cares what other peple think.

If you don't intend to reallly challange yourself in college and get a degree that will pay you well, then I do not reccomend it. A cheap college degrree will cost you about 40k. Unless you are fortunate and can get it for free. However, good jobs that were available in the 70's without a degree are impossible to get now unless you are the luckiest person in the world. Those jobs that worked up from 60k to about 150k per year are gone. If you can be satisfied with 18k to 30k in a retail sales job with no benefits then don't go to college.
