I was watching "What Not To Wear" a while ago and it drove me crazy that they kept saying "a pant", "a jean", "a boot" instead of "pants", "jeans", "boots", etc.

Since then I've noticed one or two other people saying it too. It sounds weird to me, especially with the boots and shoes, because unless you only have one leg, you're wearing two of them!

Is this some sort of recent phenomenon? Is it correct?

Since you'd say "a pair of jeans," shouldn't you use the plural form?

Wow I havent really heard people say a jean or a pant. But if that's true, wow i would go nuts! It just doesnt sound right. Why do people insist on speaking incorrectly? Slang is okay but still, to change the rules of language are just messed up. I'd correct them if i heard them saying that.

Well, since they are in the business of fashion, maybe they get tired of the same-old, same-old boring words. Don't worry, next season it'll probably be some different, annoying grammar structure!

(-: I agree with you, though, that turning the plurals into singulars sounds weird -- I'd even go as far as to say dorky (-:.

Yes, I've noticed that too. Very odd, I think.
