There were a whole bundle of Italian made 'sword and sandal' movies made in the 50s and 60s. They mostly starred Steve Reeves and included Son of Spartacus, The Trojan War, Romulus & Remus, Goliath and The Barbarians, The Last Days of Pompeii, Hercules and Hercules Unchained.
Reeves was an ex body builder who many believe led the way for the Governator.

Check out King Arthur. Its the one with Keira Knightley. It was written by the same guy that did Gladiator. Its a very good movie.

Sparticus, would be a good one, "Troy" is based on Greece and Troy, so if you want something exclusively about Rome, that wouldn't be a good idea. Ben Hur (1959) would also be pretty good, and you actually get to see one of the stunt men get trampled to death in the chariot scene.
