Why people came to the colonies? When? When the colonies started it was before the industrial revolution, so the power issue was irrelevant. At the beginning, it was not a skills issue, it was an adventure or escape issue. Either you went to places like Virginia to get rich in growing tobacco and trading for furs or you went to places like Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Connecticut, or Rhode Island to escape religious persecution. Then if you were in debtor's prison you went to Georgia as a rehabilitation penal colony. The colonists who went to New York, New Jersey, and Delaware came from crowded places in europe so it wasn't to own a lot of land but that you could own any land. It wasn't prestige, it was just to continue to be a farmer like the family had always done. Then the crossing was sometimes, though often not, easy, but jobs were not exactly plentiful in the early days, the indentured servitude (paying off the ship fare by working for several years) took up a lot of the work. Life was rough at the beginning, but people went because it was rough back home too.

As for the English wanting Canada, the biggest reason was that England was always at war with France. The French and Indian War was the reason England wanted Canada, so the French would stop fighting them or instigating the Indians to fight them. As for furs, they had plenty with the other colonies. As for coal, they've always felt that England had oodles of coal. If you are thinking that the American Indians were going to be some enormous market for English goods, forget it. The trade goods were essentially tools and trinkets and the value of foods and furs they got in return far exceeded the value of the goods traded. I hope this gets you a little closer to the right track.

1A. Cheap power? The U.S. founders were agrigarian (agriculture) NOPE
1B. Aprentiships were available to learn a skill. Especially in Jamestown, Virginia, the settlers were "gentlemen" and not used to hard work. NOPE
1C. *** Opportunity to own land. Since only men (usually first born sons) could own land, many 2nd & 3rd sons came to the colonies to stake a claim. YEP
1D. Plenty of jobs if you wanted to get your hands dirty. The Atlantic crossing WAS NOT quick and easy.

2. Toss up between A & B. I have not known Canada for coal reserves. It WAS known for its furs and fishes. (A)

(B) Britain wanted a big empire, but it had established a penal colony (Georgia) 30 years before the end of the French and Indian War.

"The British-French hostilities were ended in 1763 by the Treaty of Paris,. . .but with the handover of New France they gained control of all lands in North America east of the Mississippi River. . ."

By 1733 Britain had established a penal colony, Georgia. ". . .A group of philanthropists organized themselves to establish a colony where the "worthy poor" of England could reestablish themselves as productive citizens. . .On February 12, 1733, 113 settlers landed in the HMS Anne at what was to become the city of Savannah."

D and C
The first question encompasses the sentence after the letter C too, but the majority factor would pick the D for most came here with very little funding and were running away.
C encompasses the letter A too but the majority would read C but no profit was too little for the British.
So I got to say D and C
