There are generally two views that are accepted:
1. Hip-hop is the culture which rap is merely a part of. In that sense, the hip-hop culture consists of rap, break dancing, etc.
2. Some refer to rap as the deragatory, idiotic music that tends to go mainstream (like practically anything by Lil Jon, Lil Wayne, Ludacris, etc) and hip-hop as the less popular/less mainstream music that focuses on political issues, love (actual love, not hoes, prostitutes and what-have-you), etc.
Oh and examples of good artists (IMO) are:
The Roots
Talib Kweli
Mos Def
Beatnuts

And here's an exerpt from one of my favorite songs, just to reinforce that while mainstream rap music is oversaturated with derogatory, disgusting, dumb songs, that there are quite a few rappers that have songs that focus on respectable topics:
"Keepin' your head above water, hustlin' to survive
Some people chasin' a dream, others just chasin' a high
Some people blind leading the blind, they chasin' a lie
Some people chokin', backs broken, barely makin' it by
But still they workin' all they live, they pushin' for the light
Givin' everything they got to stitch them swishes on ya Nike's
Puttin' pockets on our jeans, mining diamonds for them rings
Rewarded with small change and bullets in the brains
And it makes me feel strange everything we take for granted"
From "Why (What's Going On)?" by The Roots
I hope that clears things up.

there is not any longer a distinction between Hip Hop and Hip-Hop, as they only have a splash between them. What you could desire to appreciate is that "Hip Hop" and "Rap" are 2 countless issues. Hip Hop is the ordinary way of existence, the flow, the existence-style, that has Rap music in it. Rap is the call, the form of the music that folk in contact in Hip Hop way of existence make. it rather is an extremely user-friendly mistake.

Hip-Hop is the culture, the music, DJ'ing, dancing, artwork, etc.

Rapping (rhyming) is a subdivision of Hip-Hop

hip-hop/rap is a genre in its own but a hip-hop song is more of a substantial beat with a chorus and lyrics while a rap song can have more lyrics than chorus and the beat goes with the rapper. In a hiphop song the rapper goes along with the beat. confusing :P

I'm pretty sure that hip hop is the new term since 2000 for rap.

I only know what works for me. I love both hip hop & rap. I find all my favorite hip/hop singers are white & all my favorite rappers are black. Go figure.
