They are in denial and that's what they should be ashamed of. The fifties were the best decade, and since 1973, real wages adjusted for inflation have declined every decade since then. The only exception might be the first 6 years of Clinton. People who rant on about how great the economy was in the 80s probably didn't realize that most places had unemployment rates well above 8% for his first 6 years.

There is nothing to be ashamed of if you are part of the working poor. If you compare the economy of the 50s ,60s and 70s there is a contrast and evolution in each decade. As technology changes so goes parts of the economy. I am part of the baby boomer generation and I see a drastic difference in the work ethics of today compared to the past. Today everyone wants to cash in on the fast and easy money with little or no effort, just look at all the on line marketing. The reality of the situation is REWARD =s EFFORT. No one is going to make you rich sitting in front of a computer. To truly accumulate wealth, you must be prepared to work very hard for it and sacrifice. Unless you invent the next "you tube" only you can change your circumstances. How much money we have or do not have is of no consequence, if we hold deep values on family and friends we are the richest people in the world.

Someone who works for a living should not be ashamed.
I think the baby boomers have had a better economy than gen-x'er's have had.
I don't know how much of that is related to upbringing and education, but I suspect our generation has declined socially and economically as a result of our educations.
Modern medicine is keeping people alive longer and people are working longer, as well. The jobs and resources are having to be spread further.
A young person who gets and keeps a job will still be better off than one who hops around.

Because then they would have to admit their responsibility in what has happened. Fewer and fewer reap the rewards that were promised and we all assumed were coming. Now we are left holding the proverbial "bag," while being one paycheck from homelessness, without a safety net thanks to the conservatives. It is only going to get worse as our children are 38th in the world in math and science as we go into our hi-tech future. We are all on our own in this shark tank of an international corporate world, being all relegated to temp help status. While a few become obscenely rich and party in Dubai, the rest of us are secretly worried about where our next meal or supply of heating oil is coming from. Welcome to the party, "Happy Days are Here Again."

because America is the "land of opportunity"... "only a lazy person could fail here... right?"
more and more are waking up to the reality that many people work very hard... but few succeed relatively...

I am the non-working poor. I am not ashamed to admit it. You know the old saying: "Stuff happens."
