While it would depend upon the tree sort, ie. Douglas Fir, Scotch Pine, Noble etc. I would have to go with white lights - small and delicate ones. Also either all white or clear glass (crystal - if you're loaded) ornaments. Stay away from tinsel, popcorn in stringilike decor. If you like flashing lights, don't get frenetic. You are trying to blend colors and textures - too much flashing overwhelms the visual sense.
Remember: simplicity is not cold - it is elegant.
Besides, all of the colorful wrapping below your tree will be a neat juxtaposition to any frostiness others may perceive of the tree.
Also, cut 1inch off of the tree trunk not more than 45 minutes before putting it into water. You will be removing the pitch closed vessels and open them up to better water hydration. Your tree will remain fresher longer!

I do both. When I used to have a big house, my tree in the living room was 18 feet tall. Around the outer surface of the tree I'd put all-white mini lights. But, inside I'd wrap colored lights around the trunk in an upward spiral, going through the spectrum from red at the bottom to blue at the top of the tree. These lights were also the older, larger type of bulbs. I called the inner lights "The Warp Core."
For the other trees in other areas of the house, I did color themes. The den tree had all blue and green mini lights, the bedroom tree had all red, etc.

I really like using red and white. It looks so pretty on the green tree. I like color but multi-color is just too much sometimes....the red together with white looks very nice I think

It depends. I do a different theme for Christmas from year to year. Sometimes it may be a Victorian theme, or maybe a patriotic tree, or even a down-home country theme. I then use a type/color arrangement of lights that would be most appropriate.

Well I have more than one christmas tree up.. I actually have 5 christmas trees up.. lol.
Why? because of the shape of my sun room, it actually wraps around my home.
I have a tree in each corner of my sunroom/ porch each of those have white lights with a string of blue.
The other tree is in my living room and I have multi colored lights on it this year.. ( It usually depends on my mood.. )
