Oh someone wanting to know our horror stories.. I love it.
Every year at Christmas time I get verbally abused by customers on a daily basis... sometimes more than once.
When it's not the holidays it's usually once a week or so..
I work at the Evansville Home Depot... we get a lot of crazy irrate customers..
Last year on Black Friday I was ending my shift, the manager on duty had turned off my light and shut my gate at the last people in my line.. there were like 4 people in front.. Well this guy gets in line behind the gate.. I said " Sir, my lane is closed, your going to have to go to another line." he says "ok" well a few minutes later I look back and he's still standing there so I say " Sir, my line is still closed, it's going to be closed for the rest of the day, I need you to please step to another line" he goes " well why the f*ck didn't you tell me this 15 minutes ago you stupid fat b*tch!" I was like " sir I did tell you and you just stood there, what didn't you understand about my line being closed? Plus theres a gate in front of your face and my light is off.. what didn't tip you off?"
Finally he left..
This year on Black friday I was actually PHYSICALLY assulted by a customer. We had certain items in our ad that were that sale price until a certain time and it clearly stated that in the ad and in the store in front of the item.. well this lady comes into my line and im checking her out and I get to that item ( it's 3 hours after the sale price ended) it rings up $700 instead of the advertised $400 which ended at 11am.. it's now almost 3pm.. I explain to her that the sale ended at 11am and it was posted in front of the item and she even had one of the items with the sign on it, and I nicely point it out to her hoping the visual will help her understand it.. well she gets all crazy grabs a handful of my hair and starts yelling and spitting in my face cussing me out telling me I better give her the sale price or she'll kick my a**.
well I finally break free of her after I punched her in the face ( which I was later told I shouldn't have done but once they seen the damage they let it go, self defense.) ( another cashier called security) They throw her out of the store and ban her from ever coming back. She ripped out half my hair on the back of my head, I have a bald spot and scratches. The cameras caught all of it on tape and I am sueing her for assult and harrassment.
I will let all the other stories go.. but I'm sorry if someone is harrassing or assulting you, you should have the right to fight back in some form or another...we do have a right and being a cashier should not be a deadly or dangerous job.. it's not like we're cops for crying out loud!
People need to just chill out, listen, and understand theres nothing we can do about it no matter how loud, mean or crazy you get, either way your not gonna get it.. so just be a descent person and let it go.. if you go crazy and threaten or beat the person you might just end up getting sued for everything you've got!

Yes, I have been verbally harrased by customers before. Customers want you to change the rules for them, and when you do not they get upset. I have been cussed at, my hands grabbed, and stuff thrown at me. This has happened at a fast food restaurant, bookstore, and a clothing store. I have been harrased by students, customers, and the president of a university. Customers think that when their shopping expereince goes bad that they should take it out on the first person they see, even if that employee is not to blame. Customers need to realize that we are all human, and we all make mistakes. We all have bad days. People have short tempers, and that is just the way it is.

No to both questions. I used to work for Walmart for nearly 6 and a half years. I was cashier for the first couple of years. The only time someone complained was when I had to card them for writing a check per check policy. Only happens when prompted by the register.

Oh goodness! I have always had a job in the customer/client service industry. I have seen/been through it all.
I recently had a client tell me that I was "ruining her life" because I denied her an extended line of credit (because her FICO was 500). I then got called every name in the book and listened to her verbal diahrea for 10 minutes before she hung up.

I was a cashier at McDonald's in college and my first day on the job an elderly man who I knew was one of the morning regulars came in. I'd never met him or spoke with him but I'd been told about a large group of seniors who came in every morning and were generally catered to. He walked up to the counter and started to place his order. I was horrified because he had a severe speech impediment and couldn't be understood. I tried to be polite and asked him to repeat himself and he got angry. He kept repeating his order but the more he repeated it the more unintelligible he became until soon he was screaming at me and pounding the counter. I was about to burst into tears when he started laughing and pointing at me and said, "I get them every time". He'd been pulling my leg but he took it wwwaaaayyy too far. He'd really made a scene and could have cost me my job if I'd not reacted properly. Over the next several months he would approach the counter each morning and tell me I looked "sexy" or try to share a dirty joke. The final straw was one morning when his order had been a little slow to come out and I physically took it to his table. He grabbed my a** and made another dirty comment. I went to management and told them it was either me or him. The manager went out into the restaurant and made her OWN scene with him and he never bothered me again.
