It used to work on this computer, but now it shows up as "unknown device". I don't know what to do to fix it. I've put it in different ports and rebooted the computer

When I put it in other computers (all windows XP) it shows up fine.

Please give a detailed explanation if you reply because I do not know anything about computers.

When I say give detail, I mean DETAIL. I don't know what "format" is or how to do it. I don't know ANYTHING. Explain it like you were talking to a retard.

depends on your operating system and whther or not the flash drive is formatted correctly. If you can plug it in other computers and it finds it, check the format and see what it says, if youu are using windows 2000 or 98 you'll need to get the driver from the manufacturer of your flash drive, if its a matter of device drivers for XP there aren't technically any drivers needed but it is possible that the driver info has been overwritten somehow and then you'll need to reformat the flash drive and start over from scratch.

if it says "unknown device" this means that it cannot find the right drivers that support the flash drive. try the add hardware program in the control panel. have it search for the drivers, and give it TIME. it takes awhile sometimes. if none of this works, look online for drivers for the device. use the add hardware program again and give it a specific place to look for the driver. make sure the drivers are in the specified folder.

Occasionally, computers do not have enough power supplied to the USB ports to power each device - try turning off another device (e.g., a printer) and then see if your Flash drive works...
