Many people who own betta fish will put a mirror in front of its bowl/tank for a short period of time each day. The idea is that the fish will see his reflection and puff up and show off, thinking he's spotted another betta fish (a rival). Usually it gives them something to do (bettas can get bored and depressed) and gives them exercise (if the mirror stays there too long though it will wear him out).
I have five dogs, but they all ignore mirrors. The puppies sniff them at first and act mildly curious, then they never acknowledge it again. Dunno what that means, really, but thats what they do.

many recognize something but it is hard to say if they see it as themselves. Humans dont recognize themselves until they are about three years old.

my puppy will bark at himself in the mirror, but i don't think it's because he recognizes himself. i think that he just thinks there is another dog in the house, but he gets used to it.

Some do. Some do not. Its a basic test of self awareness and intelligence. And its not just higher mammals that can pull it of - so can birds etc.

Monkeys can. Others tend just to see a rival. that is why birds often fly in to windows.

Not all animals most animals think its another animal. But monkeys or gorillas i think know its there reflection.
