"Average" really does not tell you anything. If you compare those with debt and include those with assets and no debt, you will end up with average wealth, meaning the average American has more assets than debts.

If you compared only those in debt, do you want to count those with home mortgages? If so, you will get a skewed figure. Consider how many people have mortgages over $500,000. Then add in people with $1,000 or less in credit card debt and you come up with a non-representative number.

Peronally about $20,000 each, but average is decieving.
