"1) i got it so bad coz I'm in da hood 2)look at all my bling 3)where da bitches at"
Wrong, wrong and wrong again. Sadly, this question is a perfect example of the fact that most people's opinions of hip hop/rap music are based on only one dimension of the genre (the mostly negative and stereotypical mainstream rap that's force fed to us on a daily basis) instead of the genre as a whole. Not all rap is like what you see on TV or hear on mainstream radio stations. If you were willing to dig a little deeper into the genre, you'd discover that not all rap emphasizes materialism, misogyny or is filled with profanity. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of hip hop artists out there who don't fit the "cookie cutter rapper" mold and talk about subjects other than sex, drugs, money and murder. For example:
- A Tribe Called Quest
- Little Brother
- Mos Def
- Talib Kweli
- Common
- De La Soul
- Dead Prez
- The Roots
- Madlib (and his alter-ego, Quasimoto)
- Five Deez
- Ugly Duckling
- Slum Village...(and plenty more)
Unfortunately, you'll rarely find any of those artists in the mainstream media because good ol' Corporate America has flooded the market with whatever "trend du jour" makes them the most money as opposed to actual talent, variety and substance.
So before some of you go judging rap/hip hop, just know that your opinion holds a lot more weight if we know you've actually taken the time to look below the surface (read: beyond the mainstream).
p.s. - And for those of you that seem to be confused about the difference between rap and hip hop, "hip hop music" and "rap music" mean virtually the same thing. However, some people associate the term "rap" with the more mainstream variety of the genre (which nowadays is unfortunately more negative and gratuitous, often including R&B or pop elements) and reserve the term "hip hop" for the variety of the genre that stays closer to the roots of hip hop music (i.e. - focusing on the positive, speaking on social and/or political issues, storytelling, bragging about one's lyrical skills while roasting another MC, etc.). So yeah. Just so that's clear.

Wow, a lot of you are being close-minded. I love hip-hop and rap music and I still have respect for rock. You just need to find the right type of rap, like Tupac or Biggie. Listen to these songs, and you'll gain a new respect for hip-hop.
"Keep Ya Head Up" by Tupac
"Changes" by Tupac
"Brenda's Got A Baby" by Tupac
"Juicy" by Notorious B.I.G.
"Runnin To Live" by Tupac and Notorious B.I.G.
"You Never Know" by Immortal Technique

Actually I love it, but to each their own, I feel worse about some of teh "rock or metal" music of today, like Pantera, Slipknot, etc. Why would you want to listen to someone screaming at you? And I can't understand what tey are saying! And what is up with the whole wearing Halloween masks year round?!

people have different tastes. the prob is that you might not know what to look for in the music to enjoy. some people like the messages in the songs. (get some public enemy)
Or you like more spitritual music (bone thugs in harmony)
Or you like some rock rap mix (get linking park/jay-z)
what i am saying is that. I hate to see people say that they dont like something when they have not been handed the perfect thing. Many people would say that they hate classical or country. But most people like beethoven's fifth, or Folsom Prison Blues

Absolutely. It drives me nuts. It is usually some male flapping his arms around and grabbing his genitals. What's that all about? The words make no sense and they are more often then not very pessimistic at best. I am probably too old to appreciate it and I do agree with everyone's right to listen to what they want to. I will just change the station. I have that right.

You're not alone. I think that they are annoying too! I wouldn't mind so much if they added in rock and made it half and half, but the hip hop and rap seem to overpower the rock.. :( Sadness, good thing there are ipods and CD players where you can listen to whatever you choose!

You dont even what your talking about. Everybody just says they dont even know what the rappers are saying, so why dont you just listen, some of it is meaningful. And Capt. whatever your name is, i love tupac!!!!!!! And it was one of the worlds greatest loss when he died. Most of rappers that talk about sex and drugs are posers. You really should listen to the real rappers like Kanye West and Tupac.

i do not find rap annoying. i hate hip hop and r&b. i like rap because it doesnt talk about commiting suicide and killing their family and hating life. they talk about stupid stuff that doesnt matter like big houses and rims. its nothing serious. i think its better than the blink 182 and linkin park type crap that hate life and want to end it all...hopefully you can see where i am coming from on my standpoint
