Simply put, that's where the people and the money are. They actually have three teams, when you count the Buffalo Bills. And to correct some of the preceding answers, Florida actually has THREE teams - the Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

New York Football Teams

First of all, New York has 3 teams: the Buffalo Bills, the New York Jets, and the New York Giants. Second of all, they have 3 teams because they are very large state, and their stadiums are spread out accordingly. Besides, other states have multiple teams: California has the San Diego Chargers, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Oakland Raiders; and Texas has the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Texans; and Florida has Miami Dolphins and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I think that it has to do with the size and population of each state.

Obviously this is referring to New York City, not New York state. The New York City area has multiple teams in every sport because they have the people to support these teams. New York teams make alot of money and have high attendance. Fans want to go to the games, they both have been highly sucessful at selling teams and the Jets and Giants are both in the top 5 in attendance.

It doesn't really make sense, since they play their games in New Jersey, but its more of a marketing thing. I mean, the New York Giants sounds better than the New Jersey Giants. New York is simply a larger market. Its kinda the same thing that the Angels did when they changed their name to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, despite not being in LA. The other thing is that they were originally from NY, when they played in Yankee stadium. They even moved to CT for a few years when they played at the Yale Bowl. When they finally got their own stadium in Bergen County, its so close to NY City (you can take a bus to the city for like $3) they decided to just keep the name NY.
