If your talking about "survival" Japanese, the basics are by no means easy but if your living here and using only Japanese you will be able to get by OK (Notice I didn't say FINE). I have lived here for 3 years I go to a communitty center twice a week for lesson's and live in a household were Japanese is the primary language.
I still can not express my opions and thoughts/ feelings about things as much as I would like to be able to. Examples would be Politics, Religion, Cultures, World Events and many others. When I have a Doctor's appointment here I still need my wife (Japanese) to go with me because Medical terms are beyond me. Language has many depths. Think about the one thing that you know alot about wheather it be Physics, Astronomy, Politics, or World History. Until you can convey all the information you know of a subject your knowledgable in you are not truly able to communicate. Just my 2 cents and basic thoughts on the subject.

You probably would be able to learn the verbal and discussion part well since basically what you're doing is throwing yourself in the deep end of the pool before learning to swim. Essentially, it is called survival or complete immersion. But you might have issues understanding slangs and words that are not in the dictionary. This is where a native speaking person who is fluent in english would help you.
However, learning to write and read it is completely another story. There is three styles in which you have to learn to do, Kanji, Katakana, and Hiragna. Often, they are mixed together making decyphering it a little more trickier when reading. When writing, you can survive off of writing in hiragana as my professor has told me.

Before I answer your question tell me please in how many years did you learn your mother tongue completely? didn't it took several years? so those who claim you could learn language in shortest way is not correct but you can learn at some level easily.
Nothing is difficult we must give a try. Have you seen a baby, baby moves in a room by stomach on floor, then by knees then by holding others leg or holding bed/table/chair and fell down several times but never give up and one day people say HEY LOOK BABY IS WALKING. This is an example for us to learn something.
I bet if you are so serious you could learn at least speaking in one month only.
Learning native language among native is good. Studying Japanese here is costly. Everything is depend on your skills.
If you have money then I will say join a Japanese language school in Japan.

Wish you good luck. If you want to learn free tell me I will see if I could give you that fast learning secret which I tell others.

I think that if you truly emerge yourself in the Japanese culture and avoid to speak english, you can expect to have a decent understanding of Japanese in 3 months.
The best way to learn a language is to live in another country. Still, you need to push yourself and avoid speaking in english. It is amazing what survival will do to you. You will learn it pretty quickly once you need to ask for whater and where the bathroom is.
Anyway, eat some sushi for me. Good luck!

Fantastic Idea - probably the quickest, easiest was to learn Japanese.
My brother did exactly that. He & a friend moved to Kyoto, got jobs teaching English to corporate employees, rented a room from a family and joined a Dojo. The total immersion had them speaking Japanese by the next year.

It's NOT that simple, unless you already have a ton of money. You just can't move there. You need a BA / BS degree to teach English there. And it's not cheap to live there. If it were, I'd be there myself. Unemployment is on the increase there, and any job other than teaching English would be VERY hard to get. Unless you happen to have any special skills that they may need. It's a very hard language to learn. And to be able to read and write Japanese will take years. Sorry, it's a nice idea, but not an easy one.
