Why do you want to be lighter complected? Dark skin is exotic and beautiful, especially in combination with Indian features. I'd find colors for clothing and makeup that would flatter your natural skintone and not worry about lightening it.

Find some nice clothes that suit your complection. I'm guessing pastel colors and mabye jeans. Grow you hair long, straight and keep it shiny black. Avoid blow drying if you can, stay away from perms, save the money. Avoid excessive make up!!! (I suppose if you want to be a bit lighter, avoid the sun at all costs but that will only go so far in making you lighter which is probably not such as desirable result)
Assuming you are over 18 here, feel free to drop my house for a chat. My skin is fair and it aint gonna go dark so we can balance each other out. (Assuming your parents do have me executed on the spot.)
On a serious note, accept that you are dark and that you are very beautiful in your own right. Take up some sports that make you feel more self confident. There are people who are gonna consider "ugly" for being dark and those who will consider you "hot" for being dark, so why not just be who you are and accept those that can accept you the way you are.
IN SHORT, IF YOU CAN'T CHANGE IT, EMBRACE IT, FLAUNT IT AND ENHANCE IT.

You should learn how to embrace, love, and most of all ENHANCE your beautiful skin tone! I would recommend using bronzer to contour your cheekbones, and a gold or emerald eyeshadow. Also, try a burgundy to grape colored lipstick.
This probably won't help if all you want is to have fairer skin, but there are plenty of things you can do with your natural skin tone that will make you look even better than trying to make a fake color.

Try talc powder, no only joking. My best advice is to leave your skin as it is. I personally feel its your facial shape and features that will make you attractive not your skin colour. Don't listen to your grandma, i know older Indians are fond of fairer skin. But.. if you really want to be lighter then use AHA's and BHA's...i think. Or try microdermabrasion. Or even lemon juice. Make sure you put on sunscreen before you are exposed to UV light. Don't put anything on your face your not certain of, you might regret it. Or just go to a dermatologist.

I do not think that it is possible for you to do that. I bet that you look pretty the way you are, do not go changing just to feel more comfortable, I bet that Mr Right would love you the way you are. Some Indians have a dark complexion that you write about, and they are still very Indian, and just as beautiful, or even more so.

Are you talking about skin or hair colour?
If it's your skin don't do it. Some skin bleaching creams and soaps have had poisonous mercury compounds in them. If someone has said you are too dark just tell the to go to hell as they are stupid.
As for hair go for a medium tone so you avoid the overall uniform colour and have a more natural look. Perhaps some highlights might suit you?

Personally I love dark skin, you should be happy with your dark skin.
Me, I have very fair skin.
Just try not to go in the sun as often in the summer, or you could seek a stylist or Tanning Salon for your answer. I'm pretty sure the Tanning Salon would know, my friend has dark skin and she somehow got a shade lighter..the people at the salon did it.

Why are we being so critical about someone with dark skin wanting to be fair............it's not any different from white people who want a tan!!
We are never happy with what we have and want to change. All I say is do what makes you feel best. If you want fair skin go for, if you want dark skin go for it.............as long as you are happy.

Well, first you might try changing your Avatar...just kidding ;)
I am also Indian (like from India, right??) and so I know how it is with our complexion. You might try using a light earthy tone, and generally light makeup, but not TOO light, or you'll look freaky. Good luck :)
