Try 'ccleaner' for a start, its free from download.com.It cleans the registries. It took 6gigs of junk from my machine. follow instructions carefully though so you don't delete anything important. The most effective way would be to save the most important stuff on disks (or preferably an external drive)and reinstall the operating system(eg windows). Theres nothing like starting with a clean slate.

Go to Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, then Systems Tools to Disc Clean-up. Say "yes" to "Clean up all unwanted files."
After this is done defrag the computer. This should take off a lot of unwanted junk. If you want to see how to defrag, ask the question "What is Defrag and how does one run it?' and the answer will come up.
Good luck.
