I believe it to be voices
Great song by a great artist!
Ironically enough, that is the last song I heard from my car cd player!

I had to bookmark this question because I read it last night and my Mona Bone Jakon CD was in my car! My favourite Cat Stevens record!. I listen to it this morning on my way to work 'cause I wasn't quite sure what you where asking. Of course, now I get it! And you know what?? I always thought that it was a chorus of human voices but now I have actually changed my mind! I think it IS a synthesizer. I changed my mind for 2 reasons: one is the sort of echoing effect you hear at the end of the "chorus" and secondly, there is definitely a synth in the song which can be heard softly in other parts of the tune.

Most definitely vocal. A very great song, from a very great artist ; very interesting lyrics : I love you my lady though in your grave you lie, these clothes will never die .... your skin has turn to white ... my lady d'arbanville. I love this song very much, great admirer of Mr Cat Stevens.
