You really can't... Just pull up the carpeting and scrub under the carpet in case P is on the floor.... Then replace the carpeting. I do love cats but sometimes you don't have a choice here. If you try and cover it then eventually the smell will come back again

White vinegar is the best thing to use. It is cheap and once dry the smell will go away and so will the vinegar smell. I like to keep vinegar in a spray bottle to clean up a lot of things. You can use it full strength or watered down. For cat urine though I would use it full strength. Get some rubber gloves, some cleaning rags and a tub full of vinegar and start scrubbing. After scrubbing blot up as much of the liquid as possible and then air dry. If the urine smell is still there after drying I would try to wash it with the vinegar once more before going to a professional cleaner.

If you are just sensitive to the small of a cat you can use one of the no vacuum carpet foams (I have used it in my car when I let someone borrow it and they smoked in it. ) You can also try Febreeze - it works really well
If it smells like urine you can go to local Wal-Mart and buy "OUT - pet stain and odor remover" and basically just spray everywhere - it uses enzymes that "eat" the urine - works really great

Try spreading baking soda all over it, rub in with scrub brush let sit overnight if possible. Vacuum up the baking soda, then shampoo the carpet if necessary.
