OK... let's pretend that you can celebrate Christmas in either one
of these two ways... first, with friends and relatives of a past time in your life when things seemed to be 'just perfect' 'OR' second, celebrate it now with the family and friends you are currently with.
Which would you choose and why?

Wow! So far I am really impressed with the heart-felt answers I am getting on this question. To answer a few of you, yes you can take whoever you need back to the 'then' Christmas. It's a time of year where we are closer to our loved ones and miss those who left us much deeper.

Though childhood holidays were always nice with all the family around, I would have to choose Christmas now with my family. These nothing better then seeing the look on my sons face when he sees all the presents under the tree. He will be 3 in Jan.

Now. Christmas past was always a ticking time bomb when I was growing up. . .some relative or the other was bound to cause a major upheaval almost every year. If it wasn't someone's drinking, then it was another person being as nasty as they could be.
Today, I can choose the family and friends that I spend Christmas with. If someone acts the fool, then they or I can leave. No more suffering through obnoxious, rude, or nasty behaviors.
To quote Billy Joel, "The good old days weren't all that good, and tomorrow's not as bad as it seems!"

THEN definately... it seems that the way things were 10 or 12 years ago it was more about family and being together and now it's gotten so out of hand that people don't think in terms of family or even the whole reason of celebrating christmas (jesus' birth) as much as they do in terms of money and presents.

With my siblings & parents before 1972. I lost my brother when he was 18 and I was 12. I am 47 now and don't remember much about him. I'd take more pictures and find out what he was about. . .and of course, warn him about the dangers of drag racing. Still miss him.

Past... I'd love to celebrate with my mother and grandmother again (they've long passed away). I miss them and would love to be a kid again with no worries. And even though silverbirth above is right... always move forward (sigh).

With friends or family of a past time. I've lost so many people. I was much happier when they were alive.

Now. Having kids on Christmas is even better than being a kid on Christmas.

Can I take my husband with me to Christmas past? I would love to celebrate Christmas with my mom and dad and brother and his family and my husband. I would love for my mom to meet my husband and I would love to meet my husband's dad. They both died before we met and married.
