Just moved - beautiful area, lots of apple trees and plenty of birds. I just wasn't expecting to see raccoons. They are very destructive and I would like to get rid of them or at least deter them from coming around without hurting them. Any suggestions would be appreciated and you can be sure I will try anything.

Ammonia will work. As i was told they don't care for the smell.

Raccoons are especially interested in anything they can eat. You need to secure trash can lids extremely well and pour some hot sauce around the rim. They will steal anything shiny so don't leave things lying around. If you put out some food they can have far away from the house, they might not be as bothersome. They are crazy about sweets....from experience, I know they can wipe out 3 plates of chocolate chip cookies in ten minutes. But they're such clowns, I wouldn't want to see them hurt. I had a pet raccoon once and Twitter was wonderful.

There is no way of getting rid of them without hurting them. Get a dog. Not a wimpy one either. Pittbull, rotwieler, akitas are good. Otherwise, take a shotgun shell, remove the pellets, and put rock salt in them. Won't kill them from a distance, and they will learn their lesson after the first time. If none of that works, and you finally get tired of it, use the one time cure all I am famous for. Dynamite. Will cure everything from being an ******* to ghonashyphylherpilaids. Hehehe. Have fun. I actually like raccons. Dump your food at the end of the yard and make sure they can't get into your trash and they should pretty much leave you alone.

make sure not to leave any trash or food outside that might attract them. Maybe put up motion sensor lights outside to scare them away. I would just enjoy them as part of the beautiful nature I lived in. Why live in such a place if you don't like wildlife. Move back to the city if they bother you that much.

make sure your garbage can lids lock on and make sure they are not nesting in your house.

Otherwise, I am not sure their is much you can do. You could call animal control to ask for advice; maybe call the humane society or SPCA or whatever for ideas on repelling them, but i don't think they can be repelled from a food source. You may have to get rid of the apple trees.

Call my friend Greg, he killed a raccoon just last week. The raccoon tore apart his soffit and facia trying to move into my friends attic. He did it as humanely as possible, so the poor thing did not suffer.

Actually the best thing to do is call someone from pest control to place a live trap to catch them. It is pricey though!!!

well, my aunt and uncle have a lot of trouble with raccoons when it comes to their trash cans, so they bunjy cord them shut at night to keep them out. maybe you should also try to keep lights on outside your house b/c raccoons prefer the dark. its worth a shot...good luck!:)

Don't leave your trash outside and make sure you have nothing to eat outside. Other than that, they really arn't that bad.
