some i'm sure will tell you avg or avast, but truth is they are not great in protection or removal.
if you are extremely carefull and know what to avoid sure they will be fine.
but best protection will be from norton, mcafee, or bitdefender

don't listen to people who say norton or mcaffee are better than AVG. they are really all pretty equal. You do not have to pay for a anti-virus service. In independatn tests by maximum PC magazine AVG actually caught more than mcaffee. It's very easy to use and the interface is user friendly. Even if you don't know much about computers the buttons are clearly marked. It even sets up it's own weekly scan and update schedule. It also reminds you if it hasn't been updated in a while for some reason.
Things are easy to remove or isolate (move to vault) to keep them from harming your system before you get rid of them and make sure you don't need them.
Just to clear things up as a person who has been using computers for 15 years, who builds his own systems from scratch, including for friends and family, who troubleshoots his own computer problems however rare they are, and somebody who keeps up on the latest computer news, I hands down recommend AVG antivirus by grisoft to anybody for all types of protection. It is the best.
