a standardised system is needed so the anyone can tell from the systematic (IUPAC) name what the structure of that compound is. However, a lot of common names are still in use now.

It provides for consistency and ease of identification of the compounds. Could you imagine trying to identify the tens of thousands of compounds if they were named randomly?
