It really depends on thekind of fish you get, like the oscar does not apply to the 1in to 1 gallon rule (actually few fish do apply) as a genneral rule on the saltwater fish in general I would pick about 5 gallons per inch of fish, but again this is really genneral it depends on the fish you choose for example trigger fish are aggressive and need more room and a bat fish needs a lot of room, then again a small damsel will be happy with his little corner of the tank. Pick a couple you want and go from there. Remember the fewer fish you have the happier the fish are.

It really depends on what fish you get. Certain fish will require larger territories, even though they are smaller, and you also have to take into account your cleanup crew.
Research the fish you want, make a list of your 'must haves,' 'would like to haves,' and 'may want if you have room,' and decide how you want to your tank together. Remember, it's always better to understock than to overstock, especially in a saltwater tank! And it's best to go slowly when adding your fish. Don't add more than one fish (or one pair) every 3-4 weeks.
Also, that all applies to freshwater, too. The inch per gallon is a good rule for beginners, to make sure they don't overstock, but when you get to fish like cichlids, who, when they spawn, will take over half a 55gallon tank, you have to keep that in mind, too.

It varies, for both salt and freshwater. Certain fish may produce more waste than others. So while one fish may meet the one gallon one inch rule, others wont because of increased waste load. Also, a certain fish may be 5 inches long, but still needs more than five gallons because his body width is extremely wide. If you go to kokosgoldfish.com and become a member, there is a forum there for saltwater species. You have to go into the genreal goldfish discussion forum. scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see a bar to jump to another forum. Everyone there is really helpful. Ask them about the different types of marine fish you are thinking about.
