!!!
You don't know what the Cold War was?

Sorry about that, but I'm surprised. The Cold War was in this century.

Essentially it was an ideological war between the Soviet Union and The United States. Communism vs Capitalism. Although the two powerhouses didn't actually fight they backed countries with similar ideologies. Ex. Cuban Missle Crisis. (The Soviet Union was equipping Cuba with missles that could be launced at the United States). This war also led to the Arms Race (the stock piling of nuclear weapons between the two countries). Neither country wanted to be outdone by the other so more and more deadlier nuclear weapons were created on both sides. The Cold War officially ended when the Soviet Union collapsed.

Hope that helped. Just off the top of my head. Wiki it for more.

A shooting war is 'hot' war. The 'cold' war saw no shooting, just alot of sabre rattling, posturing, building more nukes, and following each other's submarines in the oceans. It was the US and NATO vs USSR and the Warsaw Pact.

There were proxy wars, most notably the Vietnam and Korean Wars, but it wasn't a direct confrontation between the superpowers.
