You've kinda answered your own question - it's cheap costume jewellery so it's made from a cheap abundant metal.
Why don't you save up and by some more expensive gold or platinum ear rings - it will be worth it.

you can buy Hypo-Allergenic plastic butterflies for pierced ears and I'm not sure but I think you can also buy something you can paint on jewelry to help stop an allergic reaction to the nickle, but you would be better off buying gold or silver for pierced ears anyway. They sometimes work out about the same sort of price as costume jewelry!

Plenty of inexpensive jewelry is nickle-free and will say so on the packaging. You can also look for "sensitive" which should be nickle-free, and "surgical steel post" for earrings. Walk right up to the sales person at the store and ask for them to point you to jewelry with a qualities above. If they sales person doesn't know, it might not be the best place to find what you're looking for.

well, if it was made from the good stuff it would nop longer be cheap..lol
they do have hypoalergenic, plastic things, and even covers to go over the pins of earings and things, but why buy that cheap?
real stuff isnt all that expensive if you dont go and buy 25 things at once...
one at a time and patience, will make an impressive collection in a couple of years.....

Pretty sure businesses aren't looking for the people who have allergies to the metal, they're more concerned with just selling the stuff.

they use nickels for cheap jewelry (thats the correct spelling btw) because its cheap. its true that it irritates piercings and skin, but just invest in better jewelry than, or there are some stores that have cheaper jewelry from good material, try silver posts for earrings

okay it has been pointed out it is cheap I will point out a few other benefits.
Nickel is strong and very corrosion resistant. You won't find a better alternative for cheap jewlery than nickel.

I know what you mean! I can wear surgical steal and sterling silver. I have trouble with some gold. Good luck !
For those who have trouble with the snap on your jeans try putting part of a bandade on it the sticky part (not the pad)

The other alternative costs more, its gold !! There are no new metals to be found, we have already used up too much of what we had to begin with.
