Sixth sence is a classic. It's good, mostly clean, and not to scary but scary enough to make you shiver.

It really depends on what you're looking for.

The Halloween movies are actually pretty good if you're looking to be scared. I just had a scary movie marathon and everyone agreed that the Halloween movies were the scariest.

If you're looking for a semi-scary movie with some humor, the Nightmare on Elm Street movies are alright. They're definately not my favorite, but they're kind of fun to watch. And I really enjoy Freddy vs. Jason, so that's a good one to end with if you choose these.

If you're going for classics, you can't ignore movies like Psycho and The Exorcist. Neither are very scary now, but for their time they must have been the most terrifying things ever imagined.

Ás you can tell from my list, I'm more a fan of the older flicks, but if you're looking for an extremely gruesome movie that is also pretty scary, I suggest Saw. I haven't seen the sequels, but the first was decent.

I'm also a fan of Hide and Seek. It's kind of psychological, so if that's what you're looking for...

And the Ring, of course, cannot be left out. Another psychological movie. I have many friends that nearly wet themselves when they saw this in theaters, though I never really foound it very scary.

If none of this appeals, my personal favorites(though I seem to be alone in this) are the Scream movies. They're pretty much not scary at all, but they're funny and they do have some "jump scenes"

I hope this helps, and good luck finding a movie!

The Exorcist, but make sure you get the version with her coming down the stairs bent over backwards head-first. I saw this version and was freaked out and laughing at the same time.
The Birds, in my opinion, is better than Psycho, because Psycho is so popular you already know what happens before you see it.
The first two Halloween movies. All of the series are good, but the first two have a scary quality the rest don't have.
Warlock. Make sure you don't eat when you watch this. The second one is not as scary or even as good as the original, but it has it's disturbing scenes.
Dracula, the original version.
Saw is scarier than anything that has come out in a long time.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre from the 70's is frightening and stomach-turning.

Aliens still holds up pretty good, and even the original Alien.

Funny how some horror movies are so dated. When I was growing up a couple of movies that really scared me were The Tingler with Vincent Price and Children Should Not Play With Dead Things, now that are both really tame.

The original Omen. The Omen II isn't bad either. The Blair Witch Project is another one I'd say was very scary, but you might have had to see it when it came out. If you know nothing about it, then rent it - you'll like it. Also, The Ring, Rosemary's Baby, and most Hitchcock movies are pretty scary, or, at least, freaky.

I tend to like older horror movies better...I can't narrow it down to just one, but here are a couple suggestions from the "moldy oldie vault." If you haven't seen them, you're probably familiar with them, but here is a little about each of them.

---Carrie (1976): Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, John Travolta. A timid, plain girl with telekenetic powers gets messed with by the "popular" kids...once too many times.

---The Birds (1963): Alfred Hitchcock at the top of his game. Not all the gore and guts of more contempory horror movies, but that doesn't detract from the atmosphere and tension a bit. Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, Tippy Hedren, Suzanne Pleshett...a very brief role for Richard Deacon (Mel Cooley on the "DIck van Dyke Show")

---A Clockwork Orange (1971): One of Stanley Kubrick's gems. Still one of the most violent movies I've ever seen...and one of the best. Adds a whole new dimension to the song "Singing in the Rain."

---Diary of a Madman (1963): Vincent Price, Nancy Kovack. Why the local theater put this on as the first half of a double feature with "Son of Flubber," who can tell. My cousin took me to the movies that day. I was seven, and wanted to see the Flubber flick...she was thirteen and wanted to see Vincent Price...I slept down in the living room that night.

And one cheesy one...

The Mole People (1956): It's remarkable how many quality films there are from this era...movies that leave a lasting impression on the viewer despite a lack of special effects and limited technology available to filmmakers...this isn't one of those. If you could have died watching any of the films above, you'll die laughing at this one...so bad it's good.
