Half of the new strands of lights I bought last year do not work. Do the companies make them this way? Is there any steps I should take to make sure they work next year? And yes I did check to see if they blew out, that isn't the problem.

I used to reuse the lights over and over and found myself replacing stings of lights half way through the holidays because a section blew out . What a pain! Now, I toss the oldest ones into the bulk trash so they can be recycled, if at all possible, and I buy
new ones to replace those for the new season. So far so good...
But I do believe they engineer these for the market so they keep making money. And they are pretty inexpensive, even the name brands that I use like GE and Merry Bright.
Hey....Have a Merry Christmas!
