No, they are not.

1/9 would be equivalent to 6/54, NOT 5/54

You want to find a common denominator (the # on the bottom). That means you want the denominator to be the same in both fractions. You can do this by multiplying the two denominators together:

5 1
------ and -----
54 9

5(9) 1(54)
------- and -------
54(9) 9(54)

This comes to:

45 54
------- and --------
486 486

Since 45 does not equal 54, they are not equivalent fractions.

No 5/54 is not equivalent to 1/9. 5/54 is all ready simplified. 6/54 would be equivalent to 1/9.

NO. To be equivalent you need to multiply both the nominator and the denominator by the SAME number so that 6/54 is equivalent to 1/9 ---- not 5/54

No.
Take 1/9 and multiply top and bottom by 5.
You get 5/45 which is an equivalent fraction.

So 5/54 is not equivalent
(but 6/54 would be, which is the same as
multiplying top and bottom by 6)

5 over 54 means 5 divided by 54. 1 over 9 means 1 divided by 9.

If you do those two operations, you will get the answer. (If you can't do it on paper, ask your teacher how. Meanwhile, use a calculator.)
