Cosmo is right. SETI (the only people looking for ET) receives very little funding. It's quite disgraceful. I really believe that we'll have some sort of clue within my lifetime that there is life elsewhere. We won't see them, but we may be able to spot other indicators.
If we are invaded, though, those scantily-clad female aliens better not think they can have my Crispy as a specimen of prime human masculinity. Oh no. No one is going to be sticking probes up his bottom except me (and, on ocassion, his mother). I hope I've made myself very clear.

The supposition that there would be a war is an invalid premis to begin with. Even if we should find another species on another planet somewhere, it is most likely that we would be either so far advanced than they are or so inferior than they are that one would wipe the other out without so much as a second thought were they so inclined.
It is far more likely, however, that so long as two spacefaring species have a mutual respect for each other (an attitude that comes from cooperation, without which they would not attain spacefaring capability in the first place) then there will be no cause for conflict. Two alien species would find it far more advantageous to learn from each other than to engage in war.
The exchange of ideas and knowledge can be beneficial to both species and they will recognize this. In order to become a species able to access other planets and star systems, requires a certian level of maturity, wisdom and intelligence. With those characteristics, comes the less liklihood of a war-like nature.
We, as a species, are on the border of this point now. It is true that we still have a war-like nature, but we recognize it and subjugate it as a last recourse whenever we can. Likewise, as we explore more and more of the universe, we discover more and more about ourselves. How would we know about the dangers of too much greenhouse effect if we had not studied the planet, Venus?
I find your question altogether hinting of a deep seated self loathing. It has an air of pessimism and apathy. Instead of being a complainer or whining about political and environmental issues in the world, make an effort instead to do some good. Instead of complaining about money being wasted on explorations of other planets, go empty your bank account and buy food and clothes for the homeless. Sell your oil consuming automobile and get a bicycle, and use the money you save to feed starving children in a third world nation. Do you really need the computer you used to post this question? Sell it and invest in alternative fuel research.
It is a free internet, and you have the right to whine, but just imagine what life would be like if we made contact with another civilization and they clued us in on how to generate power by controlled fusion or how to develope an overnight cure for cancer.
I should thank you, though. I see questions like this often. They are always asked by the same kind of people with the same problem. Your problem? You fear the unknown but you don't want anyone to know, so you dress it up with phony questions like these. You have such low esteem and faith in your own species that you feel obligated to be a herald of doom and gloom.
I, and others like me, reject your insistance that mankind will destroy itself and the earth along with it. We beleive in the ingenuity and persistence of mankind to survive, grow and evolve to a better state. And time will show that we are right.
But hey, if I'm wrong, and the world does come to an end and the human race dies out to extinction....well, you have my permission to say, "See? I told you so."

For the same reason Christopher Columbus made four Atlantic voyages, discovering lands which were unknown to Europeans, the Egyptians, the Portuguese, the Chinese etc all explored the oceans try-ing to sight lands unknown to them ; mankind has always been inquisitive , adventurous, ambitious , exploring the unknown. There is only one area of unknown territory left for mankind to discover and that is lands in other worlds. Who say that aliens would be our enemies when we make contact; We ,we the people are go-ing to learn to love each other, brother will love brother... . We will tell them when that time comes that we have come a long way to tell you,we the people... we the people going to learn to love each other....

We do this because some of us are determined to do something amazing and unforgetable. Some of us just put their minds to it and try so hard- But usually never suceed.
We will not have WAR with them because nobody lives on those planets
Julie Payette is one that succeeded at going to another planet, and she's so cool. Everyone remembers her. How would YOU like to have someone doing a project on you in school? Doing a whole presentatioN? How cool would that be!? well that is their goals.
Why don't you find someone who is trying to find life on another planet and interview them? Go to the cosmodome or something and try to find someone. Good luck buddy :)

finding new life on our planet or even in space is what makes life interesting, it's human nature to want to explore and be curious about our surroundings, earthbound or spacebound and even if we do meet other alien life in space who knos, they may be as advanced as us technologically or maybe less, or maybe they maybe even more technologically advanced than us, we may go to war with them, but maybe we wont, maybe they will have different religeons to us, maybe they'll have the same or maybe they wont have any at all and maybe they will have new oil supplies and maybe they wont because they will have either used they're oil all up or they'll have found better, more ecologically friendly types of fuel that makes oil look like a waste of time, and who knows, we may go to war and make them suffer, but the same could be said for them, they could make us suffer also, but then again, we may not go to war with them at all, but at the end of the day, if there is intelligent alien life out there, i dont think we'll be coming in to contact with it any time soon, maybe radio contact with in the next 50 to 100 hundred years or so.

The whole thing is just a means keep 'defence' spending extremely high while not saying 'we are getting in position to own space' which they already have said. Right now U.S. government and department of defence with all their glorious high spending defence contractors, are in the process of weaponizing space while keeping you distracted in Iraq, Iran, N. Korea etc. Believe me the first threat from space will be from Uncle Sam. Not any aliens.

it wouldnt constitute as "waste",
because we homosapiens are like bacteria, we arrive at a new ground, we breed, we multiply, we used up all the natural resources, and we moved on to another ground.
thats the way of life, moving on. or else we would have been wipe out by another type of "bacteria".
also, because we are living in a society governed by laws and conducts, therefore we wont just have war when we found another life on another planet.

What we spend on trying to find life elsewhere in space is a mere fraction of the OVERRUN of a modest defense project. It's pathetically small.

It's in our nature to survive; eventually planet Earth will become unable to support us, either by natural causes or by us. We need to find another planet or planets to live on at some point.

Because man, by nature, is, among many other things...curios. And, I wouldn't necessarily call it a waste. Think of all the other things we "waste" money on. Besides, we want to know if all other life is as irrational and stupid as we are.
