I can't my mom and she is living with me. What does old age have anything to do with it? Is it the chemistry not being the same anymore ? If so, someone should invent some kind of pills that make them nicer so that we can live with them without pulling our hair out. Asians can not put their moms and pops in old folks homes like most Americans do.

Not all old folks are cranky. Some are sweet. Maybe your Mom needs to get out and socialize with some other seniors at the senior center so she won't be so focused on you. She needs to have activities that keep her mind and body sharp. Active minds and bodies produce endorphins which give one peace of mind and happy feelings. Encourage her to be active!

I've been asking myself the same question lol. My Mom would kick and scream all the way if she was placed in a nursing home. So here we are. They even write that cranky people live LONGER so it may be a device to survive and not die. What I've done is in knowing my mother likes old British mysteries, I have 200 ordered through Netflix and Blockbuster which should keep her quiet at least for a while :)

It all depends. Was she always cranky? If not, there are a multitude of things that can make an elderly person cranky (a younger person as well). Pain from arthritis or other sources, bad health, grief (loss of her husband, siblings or close friends), mental problems, etc can cause someone to be cranky. Also, regret can make someone cranky. Regret at not having accomplished everything she set out to do could also make her cranky. Despite the fact that she is causing you angst, please realize that one day she won't be there anymore. There are few things worse than the loss of a parent.

If you could see how America has deteriorated over the last 50 years, you would be cranky too.

Slip some St. Johns wort herbal supplement into her drink or something. I did that one time with my Mom when I was, like, age 21 and I needed something. It tends to make one more accepting, passive, and happier. She was like, "this diet coke taste a little funny", but that was it. She did budge for what I wanted. If that doesn't work, try ecstasy! Just kidding, maybe. it depends how crabby she is!

It's a freedom thing, to wait on others to bring you around is frustrating. You become acute of losing ground and time to effectively do things and maintain a sense of accomplishment. Make a steady habit of offering her a ride, or your time to complete a task of hers. She may not take you up on the offer, but she will feel better, and still usefull to accomplish these things, and gain patience again, and lose her anxiety.
