It changes the way people watch TV. You can record shows you like and watch them at your convenience. My parents have it, and some shows they watch live, but if for some reason they can't, or with other shows, they watch it when they want to. It's a great invention, and hey, it makes hour long shows only 45 mins because you can fast forward through the commercials! I love Tivo. I'd love to get it when I get my own apartment!

I don't know that the full potential affect has happened yet with TiVo, since people are still getting used to the system (TiVO, or DVR) But I think long term, when people start watching tv at their own leisure, instead of when the networks dictate, you will find that we'll become more reclusive. I see that happening with me and my friends with DVR. First we may watch a show at 9:00 but DVR the show on the other channel, that would only moderately interest us, but since we have the capability, we go for it., Then you have to find the time to watch all these different shows. And I find it cut's into my Saturdays or into my late night schedule. Then Sunday afternoon I feel the neccissity to catch up with all the shows so the week can start all over again! So from 3:00 p.m on I'm watching my DVR and no one can bother me! It's made TV much more important to me than it should be and way more important than it used to be.

We own two TiVos. One for upstairs and one for downstairs. I still do watch some "live" TV, but usually I watch something that has been Tivo'd.
Tivo'd has become a verb. That's one thing that has changed society.
I don't worry about getting home in time to watch something, because I know it will be recorded for me.
I can also take something off the Tivo and watch it on my PC. That's changed how I watch some shows.
Not related: I also watch InnerTube and other services to view items form CBS - so I'm less likely to TiVo those shows.

I have one and I love it so I can tell you how it has changed me. Unfortunately I watch more tv, because I can watch it on my own time, I can keep an entire season of shows if I want and watch it one day when I feel lazy. I dont watch commercials anymore I hate watching "live tv" I do however find more amusement in commercials when I do happen to see them.I have never seen someone say a bad thing about tivo. Its like the greatest tv companion ever.

Water Cooler Conversations - used to be you could talk about what you saw on TV last night.
Now, you don't have shared video timing.

When it records, it skips the commercials, so that helps stop some advertising.
