On my stock 1600 cc dual port vw motor with dual EMPI 40 mm carburators when I get on the gas at low rpms the motor chokes out. Should I invest in smaller jets?

Jets may be the problem, but I'd actually first suspect the accelerator pumps.

These are small piston pumps that shoots in extra fuel as you step on it. If its choking out, it sounds more like its getting too much fuel at once.

The problems are similar, with both situations, you get too much fuel at once and not enough air. Another thing that could be happening is that it may be leaning out and dying because of not enough fuel being carbureted as the throttle valves open. You may be able to pull the plugs on a cool engine right after you've killed it this way. If it is choking out, you'll see some wetness on the plug, and smell fuel in the hole. If its leaning out, it'll just be dry and maybe look like its been too hot.

Sorry for the poor answer. Bring it over, and we'll figure it out.

dual 40's is a lot for a stock 1600, can you get smaller accelerator pumps in there too ? watch your plugs carefully when dropping jet sizes , you should not have a problem with going too lean , but better safe than sorry.

yes,,i think it may be dumping a little too much fuel in it right now,,i own a repair shop, and we have built a few vw,s up they run good but wont take a lot of gad at low rpm,s try smaller jets in it id say you,ll be surprised of how much better it will run with them,,good luck i hope this help,s.

you said it..chokes out
when you get on that engine, either some thing there is being sucked close by the engines vacume, or your fuel delevery drops off, starving the engine.
