it is turning over fine but theres a red wire thats runs under the glow plugs that has burnt out at the point where it joins another cable that looks like its coming from under the battery.
Does this sound like the problem and does anybody know the correct name terms for the parts i need and is it easy to fix...

It might not be starting because the glow plugs aren't working because of the problem you describe. You could try squirting some easy start into the air intake to try and start it from cold, if this works it is likely that has caused the problem.

check that the glow plugs and the red wire are not shorting out which means touching the engine,it could mean that the glow plug relay is faulty.check that all earths are clean and tight and any power cables are or have rubbed against the body .the early mondeos did suffer from this, hope i have shed some light on this matter.

Have you checked the inertia switch? It sometimes gets triggered off if the car gets jolted etc, Im not sure where it will be in the mondeo, but I guess it is behind the stereo, and accessable from one side of the foorwell by leaning down under the dashboard.

i own a repair shop, and the wire your talking about is a fusible link, and it burned in to because of an over load on the wire this may have been caused by a relay staying on too long for the glow plugs,,you might want to have it checked real good, because even if you repair the damage ,and the wire,,it may do it again,if the relay is going bad on it it will be the relay for the glow plugs that's gone bad,,good, luck,i hope this help,s.
